Course Description

This course reflects the role of community services workers involved in the delivery, management and coordination of person-centred services to individuals, groups, and communities.

At this level, workers have specialised skills in community services and work autonomously within their scope of practice under broad directions from senior management.

Workers support people to make change in their lives to improve personal and social wellbeing and may also have responsibility for the supervision of other workers and volunteers. They may also undertake case management and program coordination.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 200 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

Course Duration:

This qualification is delivered in a Blended Learning approach over 20 hours per week over a period of 104 weeks with 12 terms of study (6 weeks per term) and up to 32 weeks of holiday. This course requires at least 200 hours of work to complete this qualification. For students wishing to obtain ACWA Skills Assessment, a further 200 hours of work is required in a separate work placement.

Academic Entry Requirements

NCCS course entry requirements are following:

  • Must be over the age of 18 years
  • Must have completed a Year 12 certificate or Certificate IV qualification in a related field or equivalent or have relevant vocational experience
English Language Entry Requirements

All students must be able to provide evidence (completed within the last 2 years) of:

  • English language proficiency of Intermediate, or
  • IELTS score 5.5 or equivalent, or
  • Successfully passed the English Placement Test at the College, or
  • Australian qualification equivalent to a minimum of Certificate IV level

Assessment Methods

Assessment is structured throughout the course. If students are unable to achieve competency, additional support is provided through academic support and access to re-assessment as outlined in our policies and procedures. Assessment requires achievement across all tasks to demonstrate competence and may include:

  • Written questioning and Exercises
  • Oral questioning
  • Project
  • Case Study analysis
  • Written Reports
  • Demonstration
  • Presentation
  • Role Play
  • Portfolio
  • Work Placement
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Course Credit
  • Students with prior learning and work experience can apply for RPL.
  • Students who have completed corresponding units of competency and/or units contained within the packaging rules can apply for Credit Transfer.

Future Pathway

Students who complete this qualification can continue their studies by advancing to the CHC60312 Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management, higher education qualifications or other care and health related qualifications.

Those who wish to use the skills gained in the qualification in the workplace, can find themselves moving into roles such as:

  • Community Care Manager
  • Community Worker
  • Community Services Coordinator

Before enrolment, each student should ensure they understand the following requirements:

  • Students are required to secure their own work placement to achieve the 200 hours of work required for this course. Assistance and guidance can be provided by the College
  • Students must undergo suitable checks (e.g., police checks) prior to placement which will be at the student’s own cost. Immunisations may also be required – this will be advised by the student’s workplace.
